Tanzania Arrests Its Top Music Artist Platnumz Over Trivial Moralistic Allegations
Tanzania has arrested its top music artist, Diamond Platnumz, for allegedly posting indecent video clips on the social media, reported local media and BBC on April 17, 2018. According to BBC online, the video clips in question were posted on Instagram and entail images of the popular African artist kissing, presumably passionately, an unknown lady.
Speaking about the arrest to the country's parliament in the administrative capital Dodoma, the minister of information Harrison Mwakyembe is reported to have proudly defended the arrest of the musician, saying the video clips contained images that contravene the country's cultural norms, as well as the provisions of a law that bans such type of images.
Another local music artist known as Nandi is also wanted by police over similar allegations.
While top artists in the East African nation are been arrested and taken into police custody for trivial moralistic allegations, six top officials of the country's main opposition party Chadema, including the party leader Freeman Mbowe, are reported to have been brought to a magistrate court in downtown Dar es Salaam on April 17, 2018 to answer charges of alleged sedition, among others.
