India has become the first country in the world to land a spacecraft on the surface of lunar south pole region, after its Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission's robotic lunar lander successfully made a soft landing there on August 23, 2023. The spacecraft was launched on July 14, 2023, hence took more than a month to make the lunar journey. A rather slow moving spacecraft, some may say, but it reached its destination in one piece anyway.
India made the lunar landing milestone after two previous failed lunar missions, namely Chandrayaan-1, and Chandrayaan-2.
With its super fast Luna-25 lunar mission's robotic lunar lander it launched on August 11 , 2023, Russia was set to become the first country to do what India has done. Although the spacecraft begun making lunar orbit after just 5 days, it, however, crashed landed onto the surface of lunar south pole probably due to pre-landing manoevring issues.
