Rest Of The World | Commentaries March 18, 2024

Vladimir Putin won landslide victory in Russia Presidential Election 2024 that was held on March 15-17, 2024. Results of the election based on exit poll, that were aired live by various television networks worldwide on March 17, 2024, showed that Vladimir Putin won a staggering 87.8% of the vote. More accurate results given by the country's electoral body on March 18, 2024, gave the incumbent president 87.29% of the vote, with almost 100% of the votes counted. Turnout for the presidential election is said to have been 77%.

The landslide victory implies a fifth 6-year term in office for President Putin.

In his victory speech aired live on March 17, 2024, President Putin said, among others, that the win will allow Russia to be made stronger. He added that the war alias the special operation in Ukraine will continue albeit he is in favor of negotiation. Also, he dismissed USA's claim that his country's presidential election was neither free nor fair, saying that USA is undemocratic and Russia's electoral system is more transparent than that of USA. President Putin then warned the enemies of Russia probably the so called West, saying that no one has ever managed to frighten Russia or suppress the will and self conscience of Russians.

Vladimir Putin (71) first came to power as vice president in 1999 before winning his first presidential term in 2000. At that time, Russia's economy was in ruins following the unexpected fragmentation of the Soviet Union in 1991. Undisputably and giving credit where credit is due, since Vladimir Putin took power, Russia's economy and technologial base have been growing steadily, with the country becoming increasingly prosperous.

The landslide victory in the presidential election gives President Putin mandate to continue what he has been doing so far in delivering development to Russia. What other countries think about the election is totally irrelevant as long as the majority of the people of Russia are happy about it. That is because presidential elections are national matters. In strict terms, therefore, unsolicited foreign involvement in Russia's presidential election could be interpreted as interference in another country's election. No country likes that, so why should any country do it?
