Tribal Gunfight In Papua New Guinea Leaves 26 Dead

At least 26 people have been killed in a bloody gunfight between warring tribes in the highlands of Papua New Guinea (PNG)'s Enga Province, reported some media on February 19, 2024.

According to the reports, the massacre occurred on February 18, 2024, after fighters of one of the province's tribes were ambushed as they were heading to unleash an attack on a neighboring tribal territory.

Bloody tribal gunfights are commonplace in Enga Province, and are said to be mainly about land related disputes. Hundreds have perished there in such battles in previous years.

PNG albeit still rather impoverished in terms of income, has, however, massive wealth of mineral deposits, and other natural assets, hence huge potential for becoming an income rich country. It has a population of 10 329 931 as of 2023, 85% of which live in rural areas. The country is very diverse with about 826 languages that probably imply same number of tribes, united by English as national language
