Tanzania Geared Towards Debut Passenger Services On Electrified SGR After More Locomotives And Railwagons Are Delivered

After rather long delay probably due to global supply chain issues caused by the Covid pandemic, Tanzania is now definitely geared towards debut electric train passenger services on completed part of its ambitious cross-border electrified standard gauge railway (SGR) project, after more new electric locomotives and railwagons were delivered, reported some media on January 9, 2024.

According to the reports, 3 new electric locomotives and 27 new railwagons were delivered on December 30, 2023.

The 160 km/h electric locomotives are said to have been supplied by Hyundai Rotem of South Korea, while the railwagons were supplied by Sung Shin Rolling Stock Technology (SSRST) also of South Korea.

Tanzania had previously received 1 new electric locomotive from Hyundai Rotem out of 17 the country has ordered from the firm, implying that 13 new locomotives are yet to be delivered.

Also, Tanzania had previously taken delivery of 29 new railwagons from SSRST out of 59 it had ordered from the firm. With the recent receipt of 27 railwagons, only 3 more are expected from the firm.

Even earlier in 2023, Tanzania took delivery of 30 refurbished double-deck railwagons from Germany.

Furthermore, the East African Community's second largest economy is said to have made an order of 10 new Electric Multiple Units (EMUs), i.e., electric trains entailing self propelled railwagons, from Hyundai Rotem, that are expected to be delivered in October 2024.

Some of the delivered new electric locomotives and railwagons including the refurbished double-deck wagons are expected to be put into operation on the now completed Dar es Salaam - Morogoro stretch of the electrified SGR project.

Train services along Dar es Salaam - Morogoro SGR stretch/line are scheduled to begin in July 2024, according to latest reports by some sources.
