Kamala Harris Is In Tanzania

Africa | Africa's Diaspora Communities | Tanzania March 30, 2023

US Vice President Kamala Harris is in Tanzania. She arrived at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam in the late evening of March 29, 2023. That was reported by some African media on March 30, 2023.

Kamala Harris’ arrival in Tanzania marks the second leg of a 6-night visit to 3 African countries. The other 2 countries are Ghana and Zambia. The first leg of the visit was Ghana where she arrived on March 26, 2023, and spent 3 nights there. She will spend 2 nights in Tanzania and 1 night in Zambia.

The US Vice President’s visit to Africa follows similar earlier visits this year by other US top politicians that included those of Treasury Secretary to Senegal, South Africa, and Zambia; Secretary of State to Ethiopia and Niger; and First Lady to Namibia and Kenya. According to US government sources, the high profile visits are aimed at strengthening ties with Africa. In Ghana, Kamala Harris reiterated that saying her visit to Africa strives to, among others, promote greater investments in development in the continent.

However, some African political analysts do not totally agree with the essence of the visits portrayed by US officials. The analysts believe that the visits are to the largest extent a counteraction by USA on increasing Chinese and Russian influence in Africa. In other words, without Chinese and Russian influence in Africa the visits may not have happened, at least not so many within such a short period of time. As such, the analysts think the US top politicians’ visits to Africa in recent time do not necessarily imply significant shift in US’ Africa policy or increased interest in the continent.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, Kamala Harris being US’ first female Vice President and of African descent for that matter, she will definitely be received warm-heartedly and with great respect during her visit in Africa.
