Felix Tshisekedi Wins DRC Presidential Election 2023

Africa | Democratic Republic of Congo January 1, 2024

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)'s incumbent President Felix Tshisekedi won the presidential election of the country's general elections that were held on December 20, 2023. He was declared winner of the election by the country's Independent National Electoral Commission alias CENI, on December 31, 2023. That was reported by various African media.

According to the reports, Felix Tshisekedi won the presidential election with 73% of the vote. The landslide victory implies a second and last 5-year term in office for the incumbent president.

However, the opposition has reportedly refused to accept the results of the presidential election citing electoral fraud. DRC's Constitution has provisions that allow for legal challenge of presidential election results.

More generally, some sources have observed that the general elections that entailed presidential election and parliamentary elections were marred by various electoral issues including logistical problems and malfunctioning ballot machines. But then such issues could be argued to have affected both the ruling party of President Felix Tshisekedi and opposition parties.
