Updated: Apr 10, 2021

Rest Of The World April 9, 2021

Prince Philip of England is dead, announced the British royalty in Buckingham Palace in London. Prince Philip alias the Duke of Edinburgh who was the husband of Queen Elizabeth II of England died in Windsor Castle in Berkshire on the morning of April 9, 2021, according to the announcement. He was 99.

Prince Philip was extremely famous not only in Great Britain but other parts of the world as well. Among others, the prince was famous for his humoristic informal chats and jokes with some members of the public as he followed behind his wife the Queen, during the latter’s official visits in England, the Commonwealth, and elsewhere. Some of his popular jokes over the years include and we quote as thus:

  • “How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to pass the test?” (To a driving school instructor in Scotland,1995)

  • “You managed not to get eaten then?” (To a British student who had trekked through Papua New Guinea’s vast countryside, 1998)

  • “Ah, so this is feminist corner then” (To a group of female MPs as he interacted in a party in Buckingham Palace, 2000)

  • “Just get me a beer, I don’t care what kind it is, just get me a beer” (In rejecting an offer of a glass of wine from Italy’s prime minister, 2000)

  • “I couldn’t care less” (About his legacy, 2001)

  • “Do you still throw spears at each other?” (To the leader of the Aborigines in Queensland, Australia, 2002)

  • “You look like you’re ready for bed” (To Nigeria’s President Olusegun Obasanjo after probably mistaking the president’s West African attire to a night gown! 2003)

His humoristic utterances were also noted in his rather often short public speeches locally and abroad, like the iconic one he delivered in Canada in 1969 probably at an event opening ceremony there, and we quote:

  • “I declare this thing open, whatever it is”

Some of his humoristic jokes and fascinating utterances that span over 70 years are now among the greatest quotes of all time!
