Child Rapists In Nigeria’s Kaduna State To Be Castrated

Governor of Kaduna state in Nigeria on September 16, 2020 signed into law a bill that permits punishment of convicts found guilty of raping children under the age of 14, with surgical castration. That was reported by some media on September 17, 2020.

More specifically, the new law, namely The State Penal Code (Amendment) Law 2020, is said to permit surgical castration for male convicts, and removal of fallopian tubes for female convicts, if found guilty of raping children under the age of 14.

The state law comes at a time when rape incidents in Nigeria are said to be sky-high, with more than 700 police recorded rape cases between January – May 2020. Whether other states will emulate Kaduna and enact similar tough laws to try curb the alarming trend in rape in Nigeria is difficult to establish.
