5 Female Egyptian Social Media Influencers Jailed For Contravening Moral Values

Five female social media influencers in Egypt have been sentenced to two years imprisonment by a court there for contravening the country’s moral values or what are known there as public morals. That was reported by some media on July 28, 2020. The defendants were also fined $18750 each.

According to the reports, one of the defendants Haneen Hossam was charged for encouraging women to meet men through a video app, as well as soliciting her followers on social media telling them that girls could make money by working with her. Another defendant Mawada al-Adham was charged for publishing indecent photos and video on social media. The other three defendants were charged for been accomplices to the above two defendants.

The court verdict that can be appealed, has been castigated by some human rights groups as an illustration of how Egyptian authorities target women on the social media especially TikTok.
