Egyptian Firm Awarded Contract To Build Tanzania´s Gigantic Hydroelectric Dam

Tanzania has awarded a contract to design and build a gigantic hydroelectric dam on the country's Rufiji River, to an Egyptian state-owned construction firm called Arab Contractors. That was reported by various media on October 22, 2018. The firm is said to have been awarded the contract after its bid for the project won.

The dam called Stiegler's Gorge Dam is planned to generate 2100 megawatts of hydroelectricity. Its construction is expected to be completed in 2021 at an estimated cost of $3.6 billion.

According to President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi of Egypt, Tanzania's award of the contract to an Egyptian firm will provide a model for cooperation between African nations.

African nations are renown for their appetite for non-African experts and firms in execution of their development projects, even in cases where African experts and firms that are capable of carrying out the projects perfectly exist.
