Magufuli Challenges Chaggas To Invest In Their Native Kilimanjaro Region

Updated: Aug 20, 2021

Africa | Tanzania May 2, 2017

In almost all parts of the world, it is often said that charity starts at home. But that does not seem to make sense to the Chaggas, the natives of Kilimanjaro region in Tanzania. While the industrial base of their administrative city, Moshi, has substantially declined with almost all big industries gone, the Chaggas who are known for their shrewdness in business, and currently boasting some of the richest people in East Africa including Dr Reginald Mengi of the IPP Group and Shirima of Precision Air, are, however, reported to have abandoned their city and region at large in favor of other regions like Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Mwanza. This is happening despite availability in the region of the infrastructure necessary for industrial development, like electricity, all weather roads, clean water supply, skilled manpower, and education and medical facilities. For instance, some reports indicate that Kilimanjaro region has more kilometers of tarmac roads than any other region in Tanzania! Now, president John Magufuli of Tanzania is said to be concerned about the attitude of the Chaggas and other natives of the region. As such, during his tour of the region on April 29, 2017, the president urged them to invest in their region so that they create jobs for their own relatives. Great advice from Dr Magufuli to Chaggas everywhere in the world! _______________________________ © 2015 - 2017 Africauptodate. All Rights Reserved
