Sweden’s PM Stefan Löfven Loses No Confidence Vote

Sweden’s Prime Minister Stefan Löfven lost a vote of no confidence held in the country’s parliament alias Riksdag on the morning of June 21, 2021. He becomes the first PM to lose a vote of no confidence in the country’s modern history.

According to some Swedish political experts, the PM who rules under the banner of the Social Democrats Party has now only two options: to quit, or to call for snap general elections.

The motion of no confidence was tabled by the Left Party after Löfven’s government announced recently, its intention to permit market rental rates for newly generated housing. The Left Party strongly opposed the government’s move, saying it violated a support deal it made with the Löfven to facilitate his re-election by parliament in 2019. As such, the party’s no-nonsense young female leader Nooshi Dadgostar vowed that Löfven must fall!

At the same time, arch-rivals of Stefan Löfven, opposition right wing parties namely Moderates, Sweden Democrats, and Christian Party, in an unusual but strategic manoeuvre, supported the Left Party and promised to vote in favor of no confidence on Löfven.
