Updated: Jun 28, 2020

Two prominent Tanzanian opposition female lawmakers, Halima Mdee and Ester Bulaya, were on March 13, 2020 brutally assaulted by prison officers and police, as they landed at Segerea Prison in Dar es Salaam, to welcome release of their party's leader Freeman Mbowe from the prison. That was reported by various media on March 14, 2020. Also assaulted was the mayor of Dar es Salaam's Ubungo urban district, Boniface Jacob.

The two female lawmakers who belong to the country's main opposition party Chadema, reportedly suffered serious injuries from the assault and have since been admitted at the city's Aga Khan Hospital.

Earlier last week, Chadema lawmakers Freeman Mbowe, Halima Mdee, Ester Bulaya, and 6 other colleagues were convicted by a magistrate court in Dar es Salaam, of sedition, rioting, and unlawful assembly. They were sentenced to a total of 60 months in jail or pay fines amounting equivalent of $156 000 in total. They have all been released from incarceration after paying the fines.
