Tanzania Plain-Clothed Police Arrests Prominent Freelance Journalist

Updated: Jul 31, 2019

A prominent Tanzanian freelance investigative journalist, namely Erick Kabendera, was on July 29, 2019 arrested at his home in Dar es Salaam by some plain-clothed police officers, and taken to custody. That was reported by some media on July 30, 2019.

Police in Dar es Salaam reportedly said the journalist is been detained over citizenship issues. However, some some human rights activists and critics of the government there do not buy the police statement. They observed the citizenship thing is just a pretext, and that the incarceration of the journalist is politically motivated. They elaborated saying the government of Tanzania uses suspensions, restrictive laws, and intimidation to silence journalists.

Back in 2017, a freelance Tanzanian journalist called Azory Gwanda vanished. He has never been seen again!
