Sweden’s PM Löfven Returns Through Parliament One More Time

After quitting on June 28, 2021 following a defeat in a parliamentary vote of no confident on June 21, 2021, Sweden’s Prime Minister Stefan Löfven made a daring return after winning a parliamentary prime ministerial vote on the afternoon of July 7, 2021.

PM Stefan Löfven has now ascended to power through parliament alias Riksdag twice. First time he did that was in early 2019 after no single political party or political bloc managed to secure an absolute majority in parliament in the country’s 2018 general elections.

Like the first time, PM Löfven's second return through parliament implies a fragile government that his party Social Democrats is expected to build with their traditional ally the Green Party, as well as with support from the Left Party and the Center Party. The latter two parties are known to distaste each other and have nothing in common in terms of political philosophy coupled with the Center Party's rather awkward stance that emanates from reluctance to accept and recognize other legitimate political parties.

Both the Left Party and the Center Party have reportedly said very categorically that while they have voted for the return of PM Löfven, they intend, however, to put forward their own budgets in the coming autumn, hence casting a serious doubt about how long a new government by Löfven would last. Löfven himself has reportedly said he will go if his autumn budget does not receive adequate support in parliament.

Above all, the Left Party may trigger a damning motion of no confidence again, if the party thinks that Löfven's party was not adhering strictly to the terms of their partnership deal.
