Queen Elizabeth II Supports "Megxit"

Updated: Jan 15, 2020

Queen Elizabeth II of England on January 13, 2020 supported Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle's decision to ditch front-line duties of the British Royal Family. The Queen reportedly made the announcement in a statement issued shortly after a Royal Family summit at Sundringham, that addressed the landmark decision by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The summit was attended by the Queen, Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince Harry.

In expressing her support for the young royal couple's decision, the Queen reportedly observed and we partly quote:

"... My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan's desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family. ..."

Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle announced their decision to step back as senior members of the Royal Family, in a statement they shared on Instagram on January 8, 2020, reportedly just 10 minutes after they had notified the Queen and some other senior family members about it. The decision by the extremely famous royal couple made headlines worldwide, and dubbed "Megxit" probably implying when Duchess Meghan Markle speaks, Duke Harry listens, despite the couple having doubtlessly made the decision together.

Notwithstanding, however, in our view the Queen's support of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's decision demonstrates remarkable respect for individual freedom. In other words, the support accepts without any judgements, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle's personal choice about what they want to do with their lives as couple. This action by the Queen should be emulated by others worldwide.
