Katy Perry writing on Twitter on April 15, 2021 lambasted social media calling it trash. She added and we infer that social media portrayed the decline of human civilization.

This is not the first time the global music megastar and entrepreneur has castigated social media. In 2017 for instance, she made a merciless attack on Instagram saying that the platform has generated a culture by which peoples’ lives are shaped by their photos hence disabling people from being themselves.

In our view, Katy Perry’s latest attack on social media is definitely significant and needs to be pondered seriously. The attack seems to support some other emerging societal concerns about social media and particularly the tendency of some social media platforms to prioritize and favor contents from the famous and wealthy irrespective of whether the contents have intellectual or positive social change value or not. At the same time, contents from ordinary people are often marginalized.
