Joint South Africa, China, And Russia Naval Exercises Begin

Africa | Rest Of The World | Commentaries | South Africa February 17, 2023

The second joint naval exercises involving South Africa, China, and Russia, called Exercise Mosi II, have begun off the Indian Ocean coast of South Africa. The exercises are hosted by South Africa and scheduled for February 17 – 27, 2023. First such naval drills were held in 2019 under name Exercise Mosi I.

China and Russia offered immense and unwavering military, economic, and political support to the struggle against the former apartheid regime in South Africa. That has led to very close friendship between the two nations and South Africa. As such, the involvement of South Africa in the naval exercises with China and Russia while said to be routine, could be seen as reiteration and reinforcement of incredible historic ties that are based on mutual concern, trust, and respect.

Notwithstanding, however, the so-called West is said to be unhappy about South Africa’s decision to host and take part in the joint naval exercises with China and Russia. But then, one wonders why the West is upset about that, while they know very well that some Western countries were staunch supporters of the former apartheid regime in South Africa. The countries even went as far as denouncing those who were fighting and dying for the liberation of South Africa from the egoistic and evil regime, labelling them terrorists. The ruling ANC party in South Africa was one of the organizations slapped with the terrorist label by the Western countries.

It is paradoxical that South Africans would be expected by some, to forge stronger ties with those who harmed them in the past, than with those who supported and stood by them during their most difficult time in the past.
