Islamist Insurgents Capture Palma Town In Mozambique

Africa | Mozambique March 28, 2021

Islamist insurgents have captured the town of Palma in Mozambique, reported some media on March 28, 2021.

The capture of the town located in the country’s oil and gas rich northern province of Cabo Delgabo, follows series of attacks on the town by the insurgents, that began on March 25, 2021. Several people including some foreigners are said to have perished in the attacks, while thousands of the town’s inhabitants have fled.

Palma is within the vicinity of Mozambique’s ongoing massive $60 billion natural gas projects, hence one of the country’s important and strategic towns. The capture of the town by the insurgents some of whom are said to be linked to the notorious terrorist group ISIS, poses a direct threat to the projects in terms of supply of necessary inputs. Already, because of the capture, Total has reportedly suspended its $20 billion Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) project in the area.
