Akufo-Addo Wins Ghana Presidential Election 2020 As Rival Mahama Claims Voter Fraud

Africa | Ghana December 11, 2020

Incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo has won Ghana presidential election held on December 7, 2020. Mr Nana Akufo-Addo was declared winner of the election hence next president of Ghana by the chairperson of Ghana Electoral Commission Jean Mensa on December 9, 2020. According to the declaration, Nana Akufo-Addo won by 51% of the vote, while his main rival John Mahama got 47% of the vote.

Nevertheless, John Mahama has reportedly refused to concede defeat, saying he categorically and firmly does not intend to congratulate anyone because the election was rigged. He added the victory of Nana Akufo-Addo was a “steal”.

This is second time Mr Mahama has been defeated by Mr Akufo-Addo at the presidential ballot place. The first time was in 2016 when a defeat by Mr Akufo-Addo denied Mr Mahama a crucial second presidential term. The victory by Mr Akufo-Addo of the 2020 presidential election implies a second four-year term in office.

While Mr Mahama alleges voter fraud in the presidential election, the regional ECOWAS Observer Mission led by ex-President of Liberia Ms Ellen Johnson Sirleaf have reportedly said the election was peaceful, transparent, free, and fair.
