At least 4 people have died as violent protests escalate in Senegal, reported some media on March 6, 2021.

The protests entailing clashes between protesters and security forces started on March 3, 2021 in the capital Dakar, following arrest and incarceration of the country’s main opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, for allegedly raping a beauty salon worker.

The protests are said to have escalated and spread to other parts of Senegal on March 5, 2021, after Mr Sonko appeared briefly in court and returned into incarceration.

Until now, Senegal was one of the most peaceful and politically stable countries in West Africa.
