Air Tanzania To Begin Commercial Use Of Its Boeing 787-8 One Year After Delivery

Air Tanzania alias Air Tanzania Company Limited has announced it will begin flights with its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner jet from June 2019, reported some media on April 27, 2019.

According to the reports, Air Tanzania will launch 4x weekly flights with its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner from Dar es Salaam to Johannesburg from June 28, 2019; and 3x weekly flights with the passenger jetliner from Dar es Salaam to Mumbai from July 17, 2019. Flight tickets for the two routes are now on sale.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was delivered in July 2018 and since then, with exception of a handful of inaugural flights locally, it has been parked idle at Dar es Salaam's Julius Nyerere International Airport. The envisaged regular flights to Johannesburg and Mumbai will therefore come almost one year after the plane was delivered.

Air Tanzania has in the past one year or so increased its fleet considerably, from almost zero to 8 planes. The latter include the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, 2 Airbus A220-300, 3 Bombardier Q400, 1 Bombardier Q300, and 1 Fokker 50. Also on order and expected to be delivered this year is another Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner and 1 Bombardier Q400.

Notwithstanding, however, taking delivery of so many expensive state-of-the-art planes within such a short period by Air Tanzania comes with a big challenge. The national airline will have to make money from the planes in order to justify their purchase to tax payers!
