Ukraine's Elite Political Establishment Humiliated As Political Rookie Volodymyr Zelensky Wins P

Just like US President Donald Trump before him, political rookie and comedian Volodymyr Zelensky has also done it big time. Winning the second round of Ukraine's 2019 presidential election with a landslide victory, hence delivering a devastating blow to the country's elite political establishment. The election was held on April 21, 2019.

As of 84% of the votes counted, Mr Zelensky had received 73.4% of the votes compared to 24.4% received by his rival and incumbent President Petro Poroshenko. The latter has conceded defeat albeit vowing to remain in politics.

The declining popularity of Ukraine's elite political establishment as showed by the landslide victory win of the presidential position by the newcomer to the political arena Volodymyr Zelensky, is said to be an outcome of increasing public discontent with the country's elite politicians. The latter are alleged for failing to contain corruption in the public sector as well as safeguarding interests of the rich instead of the majority ordinary citizens of Ukraine. This political trend may occur again and again in Europe and elsewhere, as ordinary people understand more the relationship between political systems and the wealthy in pure capitalist societies.

Notwithstanding, however, Ukraine's presidential election was conducted freely, fairly, and peacefully despite the country having democratized very recently. It was, indeed, a great example of a truly democratic election. The performance has been applauded worldwide and should be emulated by other recently democratized nations.
