Tanzania's Makonda To Arrest All Gays Within 7 Days

On October 29, 2018, the regional commissioner for Tanzania's commercial capital Dar es Salaam, Paul Makonda, threatened to arrest all suspected homosexuals in his area of jurisdiction within a week, reported some African media on October 30, 2018.

To be able to effect his threat, the government's regional representative is said to have urged the city's inhabitants to provide information they may have about presence of homosexuals in the city, so that arrest can be made. He argued homosexuality contravenes Tanzania's moral values as well as the country's two main religions, Christianity and Islam.

Involvement of the regional political boss in individual choices and decisions related to morality is not new. A few days ago, he summoned one of Tanzania's popular female artists and socialites Amber Rutty, after an X-rated video showing her having steamy anal sex voluntarily with two unidentified men leaked.

Under applicable Tanzanian legislation enacted during the British colonial rule, homosexuals risk up to 30 years or life imprisonment.
