Dar es Salaam's TAZARA Flyover Inaugurated

TAZARA Flyover in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, was inaugurated by the country's president Dr John Magufuli on September 27, 2018. It becomes the first flyover in Tanzania.

TAZARA Flyover is located at the cross-junction formed by Nelson Mandela Expressway and Nyerere Road. It is expected to alleviate traffic congestion along the latter, a very busy arterial road linking Julius Nyerere International Airport and downtown Dar es Salaam.

Construction of the flyover commenced in October 2016 at a cost of $45 million. Several more flyovers are planned for Dar es Salaam, with one of the largest, three level Ubungo Interchange, already under construction. A total of $225 million is said to have been earmarked for the flyovers and associated road improvement work.

Notwithstanding, however, for TAZARA Flyover and subsequent flyovers to be truly effective in combating Dar es Salaam's chronic traffic congestion, total overhaul entailing conversion of applicable arterial roads, e.g. Nyerere Road, Nelson Mandela Expressway, Morogoro Road, Bagamoyo Road, and Kilwa Road, into urban Freeways/Motorways may be necessary.
