Burberry Burnt Unsold Products Worth Millions In 2017

British upmarket fashion and beauty company Burberry burnt unsold products worth over $40 million in 2017, reported various media sources on July 20, 2018. Burnt items included unsold outfits, fashion accessories like bags, beauty products like perfumes, etc.

In trying to rationalize its action, the company argued the burning was necessary to protect its brand. It also said the burning was environmentally friendly because generated energy was harnessed.

Notwithstanding, however, the action of the company is reported to be under attack from various quarters, with some wondering why the company refrained from giving the unwanted products to charities for auctioning, or outlet stores, so that ordinary and less wealthy people could buy them. That could have enhanced the company's public relations as well!
