Kenya's Mombasa - Nairobi SGR Starts Operations

Africa | Infrastructure | Kenya May 31, 2017

Kenya's recently completed Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line between Mombasa and Nairobi commenced passenger service operations officially on May 31, 2017. The Chinese built modern railway line is 480 kilometers long, and costed $3.2 billion. It is reported to be the country's largest infrastructure project since its independence in 1963 from British colonial rule. Kenya's SGR project is part of Kenya's broader goal for modernizing its transportation sector and catalyzing indigenous industrialization, as well as enhancing East Africa integration. The completed Mombasa - Nairobi SGR line constitutes phase one of the project, with subsequent phases to entail extension of the line to Kisumu on Lake Victoria and probably further beyond to Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and DR Congo. _____________________________ © 2015 - 2017 Africauptodate.
