Museveni Orders Uganda's Military, Police, And Intelligence Services To Stop Torture

Updated: Aug 20, 2021

Africa | Uganda May 16, 2017

President Yoweri Museveni has ordered Uganda's military, police, and intelligence services to stop torture of crime suspects. The order was in a letter to the heads of the three security bodies, that was made available to news media on May 16, 2017. In the letter, president Museveni said that torture is unnecessary and wrong, and that it may pose possible mistakes that may even interfere with the fight against crime. He continued that there was the risk of torture being used on entirely innocent people, as well as some detainees being forced into false confessions in order to escape their ordeal. Great decision by president Museveni, that should be emulated elsewhere in Africa where systemic torture is still condoned! _____________________________ © 2015 - 2017 Africauptodate.
