Barbados To Become A Republic Next Year

Barbados’ Governor-General Dame Sandra Mason on September 15, 2020 announced that Barbados will become a republic by November 30, 2020 to coincide with its 55th anniversary of independence from Britain. That was reported by some media on September 16, 2020.

Barbados becoming a republic implies that the Caribbean country will remove the Queen of England as its head of state. As a republic, Barbados intends to name more national heroes, according to the reports.

Barbados will become the third member state of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) that is a republic, after Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana. Remaining CARICOM member states including Jamaica still embrace the Queen of England as their head of state.
