Polling stations in Rwanda opened on August 4, 2017, for the country's 2017 presidential election. The incumbent president Paul Kagame is contesting for another term in office against a very fragile opposition represented by only one presidential candidate from one of he country's six registered opposition parties. The other presidential candidate is reported to be an unknown independent politician. As such, many political analysts believe that Mr Kagame will easily win it with a landslide victory. In previous elections, he won with over 90% of the votes.
The fragile opposition in Rwanda has been attributed to authoritarianism by Kagame's government over the years, characterized by systematic use of intimidation and other repressive mechanisms against its political opponents and other critics within Rwanda and abroad. Notwithstanding, however, Kagame's government has also been credited for delivering many economic and social milestones after the country's 1994 genocide.
