Africa Requests UN To Discuss Racism Against People Of African Descent
African countries have requested United Nations Human Rights Council to debate racism and police brutality against people of African descent as a matter of great urgency, reported some media on June 13, 2020.
The request made on June 12, 2020, comes at a time of increasing racial injustice protests worldwide following the barbaric and sadistic murder of unarmed handcuffed African American George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 25, 2020, by a racist European American policeman.
The request is said to have been made in a letter to the UN Human Rights Council by Burkina Faso's ambassador to the UN, on behalf of 54 African countries. In the letter, the African countries reportedly asked the UN Human Rights Council to hold the debate on racism when its 43rd session resumes next week. More specifically, in the letter the African countries are said to have asked the UN human rights body to debate and we quote:
“racially inspired human rights violations, police brutality against people of African descent and the violence against the peacefully protests that call for these injustices to stop”
