The leader of Tanzania's main opposition party Chadema, Mr Freeman Mbowe was arrested in Dar es Salaam and sent to jail on November 23, 2018, for allegedly failing to appear in court on two occasions, reported some media on the same day.
At the time of his arrest, Mr Mbowe was in court in a controversial trial hearing for alleged involvement in a peaceful demonstration in Dar es Salaam earlier this year, in which the country's police brutally shot dead an innocent 22 year old beautiful college student called Akwilina Akwilini.
Also arrested alongside Mr Mbowe, was a Chadema member of parliament Esther Matiko.
Persistent harassment, arrest, and imprisonment of opposition leaders and members, for trivial and arbitrary indictments are now common in Tanzania.
