8 000 US Starbucks Cafés Closed For Racial-Bias Training

In April 2018 two innocent African Americans waiting for their friend in a Starbucks café in Philadelphia were arrested after the café's manager reported them to police for trespassing. The arrests made headlines worldwide and sparked massive public outcry in the US, with Starbucks accused for condoning and perpetrating racism in its cafés.
Following the public outburst, Starbucks' CEO Kevin Johnson acknowledged prevailing racist practices in his company through apologizing for the racist arrest of the African Americans. He promised such racial incident would not happen again in a Starbucks outlet. In attempting to ensure that, on May 28, 2018, Starbucks announced it will close about 8 000 of its cafés in the US for what it called a mandatory racial-bias training on May 29, 2018, to about 175 000 of the company's employees.
